Xbox July 2026 Update: 15-Character Gamertags, Service Alerts and Every Major Change

The Xbox July 2026 console update adds longer unique gamertags, redesigned libraries, service alerts and useful cloud gaming improvements.

The Xbox July 2026 console update is rolling out with a surprisingly broad set of quality-of-life upgrades. The headline change is the return of longer unique gamertags, but the release also improves the game library, profiles, wishlists, cloud gaming and the way players check Xbox service problems.

Here is what changed, who can use each feature and where to find the new settings.

Unique Xbox gamertags can now use 15 characters

Xbox has expanded unique gamertags from 12 to 15 characters. The extra space is available when the name is unique and available. Names that need an identifying suffix, or use non-Latin characters, may still be limited to 12 characters.

Before paying to change a gamertag, preview it carefully and check whether Xbox adds a suffix. The longer limit gives returning players more freedom, but it does not remove the requirement for the name to be available.

A cleaner, more customisable game library

The update adds a poster-style artwork option to My games & apps. Players can also choose which badges appear over game tiles, reducing visual clutter from installation, ownership and subscription indicators.

To check the options, open My games & apps, go to Manage, select Settings, then look for the customisation controls. The exact wording can vary while the update finishes rolling out.

Xbox service alerts now appear on Home

When Microsoft confirms an Xbox network problem, a status indicator can now appear in the Home navigation. Selecting it opens more information about the affected service. That should make it easier to distinguish a platform outage from a problem with your console, router or game.

Release notes are also easier to reach from Home, with more detail about features and major fixes.

Profiles, wishlists and cloud gaming improvements

  • Profile colours: expanded colour controls include precise HEX values and colours matched to a gamerpic.
  • Mutual friends: profiles can show shared connections.
  • Wishlists: unreleased titles can be saved directly from supported game cards.
  • Cloud gaming: loading screens now display game artwork and move more directly into the stream.
  • Accessories: the Xbox Accessories app can identify the connected controller model more clearly.
  • Offline personalisation: more background and colour choices remain available when the console is offline.

Bug fixes included in the update

The release addresses crashes in My games & apps during updates, navigation focus unexpectedly resetting, and the game list reloading after players leave achievement details.

How to install the Xbox July 2026 update

  1. Press the Xbox button and open Profile & system.
  2. Go to Settings > System > Updates.
  3. Select the available console update and keep the console connected to power and the internet.
  4. After restarting, return to Updates to confirm the installation completed.

If a feature is missing immediately after updating, it may still be rolling out by region or account. Restart the console once and check again later rather than repeatedly resetting it.

What matters most

This is not a performance or graphics overhaul, but it improves tasks Xbox owners use every day. Longer gamertags will get the attention; built-in service alerts and clearer libraries may be the changes that save players the most time.
