How to Fix PS5 DualSense Stick Drift: Safe Troubleshooting Before You Pay for Repair

Is your PS5 controller moving by itself? Try these safe DualSense stick drift checks, reset steps and software fixes before arranging a repair.

PS5 DualSense stick drift makes a character, camera or menu move when you are not touching the analogue stick. The cause can be software, dirt around the stick mechanism or wear inside the controller.

Start with the reversible checks below. Do not open an in-warranty controller, spray liquid into it or follow aggressive repair videos before checking PlayStation’s repair options.

Confirm it is really stick drift

  1. Test more than one game. A single title may have its own dead-zone or input bug.
  2. Disconnect other controllers and input devices.
  3. Return the affected stick to centre and watch whether menus continue moving.
  4. If the game offers a dead-zone setting, raise it slightly and test again.

A small dead-zone increase can hide minor drift, but it also reduces fine aiming response. Treat it as a diagnostic step, not proof that the hardware is healthy.

Update the controller and PS5 system software

Install current PS5 system software and any available DualSense device-software update. Keep the controller connected by USB during an update and do not unplug it until the process finishes.

Then fully restart the PS5 rather than using Rest Mode. This clears temporary input and connection problems.

Reset the DualSense controller correctly

PlayStation recommends a hardware reset when the controller is behaving unexpectedly:

  1. Turn off the PS5 console.
  2. Disconnect the DualSense from its USB cable.
  3. Find the small reset hole next to the Sony logo on the back.
  4. Use a pin or similar tool to press and hold the internal button for at least five seconds.
  5. Reconnect the controller to the PS5 with the official USB cable and press the PS button.

The reset does not repair a worn analogue module, but it can resolve pairing, calibration and firmware-state problems.

Clean around the analogue stick safely

Turn the controller off. Use a clean, dry microfibre cloth around the base of the stick. Rotate the stick gently through its full range while removing visible dust. A hand air blower can help dislodge loose particles.

Avoid water, household cleaner, WD-40 or forcing compressed air at very high pressure into the controller. Liquids can spread contamination or damage internal components.

Check Bluetooth versus USB behaviour

Test the controller with a known-good data-capable USB cable. If the unwanted movement appears only over Bluetooth, remove nearby wireless interference, reconnect the controller and test closer to the console. If drift is identical over USB and Bluetooth in several games, hardware wear is more likely.

When a repair is the right answer

Arrange a repair if the controller still drifts after an update, reset, clean external inspection and multi-game test. Also stop troubleshooting if the stick feels loose, fails to return to centre or has suffered liquid or impact damage.

Check the controller’s warranty status before paying a third party. PlayStation Repairs can guide you through supported service options. Opening the casing may complicate a warranty claim and risks damaging ribbon cables, batteries and clips.

Quick DualSense drift checklist

  • Test two games and remove other input devices.
  • Install PS5 and controller updates.
  • Restart the console.
  • Reset the controller for at least five seconds.
  • Clean only the exterior with dry, safe tools.
  • Compare USB and Bluetooth behaviour.
  • Use PlayStation Repairs if drift remains.
